By Tom Doudney AT 15, John Carr felt “very, very lucky” stepping ashore in Belfast, Northern Ireland, after the sinking of his merchant navy oil tanker, The Stratford in the Atlantic Ocean during World War 2. Now 92, and Templeton RSA’s oldest returned serviceman, Mr Carr’s thoughts will drift back to those years and his fallen comrades on Anzac Day. He remembers well the night in September 1940 when his ship was hit by a torpedo while travelling in a convoy on the way to Jamaica. “It was about midnight, we were asleep in our cabin and there was an almighty thud which woke us all up. I looked out of a porthole and I saw a reflection of flame and I thought it was another merchant ship in the convoy but it was us on fire because we had oil bunkers and we had been hit there,” Mr Carr said. •Turn to page 4

By Julia Evans AVONHEAD PARK Cemetery could be renamed to reflect its significance as the final resting place of many victims of the earthquakes. The Friends of Avonhead Cemetery group is lobbying to have the name changed to the Avonhead Memorial Cemetery. In a deputation to the FendaltonWaimairi-Harewood Community Board, group chairman Clive Paris told the board the February 22, 2011, earthquake memorial should be reflected in the cemetery’s title. “The cemetery is the final resting place for the four unidentified people and many others who lost their lives in the earthquake,” he said. The four people who lost their lives in the CTV building and could not be identified after the quake were Shawn Lucas, of Christchurch, Elsa Torres De Frood, of Peru, Rhea Mae Sumalpong, of the Philippines, and Veleri Volnov, a Russian-born New Zealand resident. •Turn to page 4

THE JOHN Carr’s of this world have seen and experienced things many of us hopefully will never have to. Seventy-six years ago John’s merchant ship was torpedoed during the early stages of World War 2. Not everyone on board survived, but John, then 15 made it to the safety of Belfast, Northern Ireland. Now 92, he is the Templeton RSA’s oldest returned serviceman. Reporter Tom Doudney interviewed him (page 1) and reports back that John is a cherry bloke, looking forward to another Anzac Day next Tuesday. John went on to join the Royal Navy and saw action right through to the end of the war, which of course was a great relief. “We were still alive, that was the thing. We had come through it.” That says it all. – Barry Clarke

In Brief FUNDING GRANT The Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board has approved the grant of $600 from the 2016/2017 youth development fund to two residents in the western area. Islington resident Michaela O’Donoghue was granted $300 to compete in the National Rock ‘n’ Roll Competitions in Wanganui this month. Another $300 was granted to Hornby resident Chyna-Maree Keen who will attend the New Zealand Softball Developing Girls’ High Performance Camp.

His views were supported by his wife Anne Prescott who said the residents would like to sit at their outside patio on sunny days but could not with the noise. At the meeting Mr Prescott raised concerns residents could not open their windows near the road and often had the daylight blocked out. “Hardly an acceptable retirement situation,” he said. The residents will make a deputation to the HalswellHornby-Riccarton Community Board. Dr Woods said the residents have a legitimate concern as the road was never meant for short cuts. She said it is important the issue is brought to the community board so the council staff can look at different options to address the issue. “There has got to be a proper look at this to make sure we are not just shifting the problem from one street,” she said. PARKING NIGHTMARE Residents of Bentley St, Fenhall St, Pinehurst Crs and Penwood St in Avonhead feel unsafe driving out of their own driveways. There are too many cars from nearby businesses lining the streets. There is currently a two hour parking limit on the streets but the board is looking to cut that down to 60 minutes. Call to change cemetery name

•From page 1 There were a further 20 people laid to rest in the cemetery, which features a large circular memorial with a stone dedication in the centre. The central feature of the memorial is intended as a gift from the city to the four unfound victims – it includes six plaques with text in English, Filipino, Maori, Russian, Spanish and braille. The group also want the 30-year-old street signage and the cemetery’s frontage to be updated. Mr Paris said the cemetery is difficult to find, which is not ideal when there are families visiting from abroad. Families have had to ask residents for help when they’ve been lost, he said. “It’s really hard to get to, especially if you don’t know where you’re going,” board deputy chairman Sam MacDonald said. The board is waiting for an investigation into the requests by city council staff and will go back to the group with its findings.

MEMORIAL: The Friends of Avonhead Cemetery want recognition for the cemetery as the official internment site for the February 22, 2011, earthquake victims.

It was very, very cold.” Some of the crew were suffering from hypothermia by the time they were picked up a few hours later by a naval vessel. In May, 1943, when he was 18, Mr Carr joined the British Royal Navy with which he served for the remainder of the war. In April, 1945, his naval party landed in Ostend, Belgium, as the Allies pushed towards victory. “We stayed in Holland for a while and fed the children, they were starving to death, and we went right through to Germany. Our object was to take the Blohm & Voss U-Boat yards in Hamburg which we did because we thought the Russians might have been

coming down the Elbe river and taking all the secrets of the Germans,” Mr Carr said. “We were successful, we got all that, and I stayed in Hamburg for nearly two years after. I was in Hamburg for the Armistice Day and all that.” He remembered the end of the war as a great relief. “We were still alive, that was the thing. We had come through it.” After the war, Mr Carr and his wife emigrated from the United Kingdom to New Zealand and he joined the newly formed Royal New Zealand Navy. Anzac Day still meant a great deal to him. He said it was important that the children of today were aware of what they had been fighting for – freedom and democracy.

Brockovich joins quarry battle

By Georgia O’Connor-Harding CELEBRITY environmental activist Erin Brockovich has been called in to help residents suffering long-term health effects from nearby quarries in Yaldhurst. Residents living as close as 80m to Winstone Aggregates held a meeting with the activist and legal clerk last Tuesday. Mrs Brockovich was in the city earlier this week to speak with people still waiting for insurance claims to come through postearthquake. During that time, it was arranged for residents to meet with Mrs Brockovich and Shine Lawyers New Zealand managing director Andrew Hooker for about an hour. Mrs Brockovich is most famous for her successful lawsuit against the huge company, Pacific Gas and Electric Company, and was immortalised in a film named after her. Resident Anna Youngman said photographs of the dust-infested conditions residents are living in will be shown throughout America and Australia. “It is just going to make this clean, green image of New Zea-

Mr Hooker said resources and expertise, including specialised air monitoring equipment, will be sent over from the United States. “It is very early days for us; we certainly are going to be supporting these people and Brockovich is not back in the United States yet, but when she is, she will send us equipment over so we can start taking this case on,” he said. Mr Hooker said it is a basic human right to have clean air and drinkable water, and authorities need to step up to make sure it happens. It was reported two independent tests showed dust near the quarries contained crystalline silica which causes lung cancer

and silicosis. Last year, testing by Environment Canterbury showed dust around Yaldhurst had exceeded air pollution guidelines on 16 occasions and is associated with quarry activities. Some residents were recently informed their water is contaminated with E. coli bacteria. “If you go out to hang the washing out, you put a mask on. If you are inside, you have to put a mask on . . . for me, being treated like a third world country resident, I just had to get off that merry-go-round and go public,” Mrs Youngman said. Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board chairman Mike Mora said Brockovich getting involved is the best thing that could ever happen.

Botanist’s fight to bring back native Carol Jensen has spent more than 30 years working as a botanist and cultivating her own native miniature forest. She spoke to Georgia O’ConnorHarding about her love for the outdoors, her battle to keep native plants in the city and her special rejuvenation project on Banks Peninsula Tell me about the hillside that took you more than 30 years to plant? It is less than a hectare but I guess I have always been keen on native trees and native plants. When we bought this property 30 years ago, it was just land with no trees on it. It is a nice piece of land on Kennedys Bush Rd just at the base of the hill opposite the Halswell Quarry. It is a lovely site to plant all sorts of native plants. There are all types of vegetation. You could have forest, wetlands and rocky outcrops, grasslands, shrublands vegetation, so it was perfect for me. It is located at the base of the hill near Hyndhope Rd. What gave you the stamina to

keep planting the same hillside for 30 years? I guess I have a passion for native plants and also partly because I work as a selfemployed botanist. There is very little native vegetation left in

the city because it has all been developed for farmland or city. But there is some around Lake Ellesmere and Banks Peninsula. I am interested in trying to keep any remnants there are and making sure they can survive for

and I think that is sad. Most people wouldn’t have a clue what a native tree looks like. I think we should try and keep any remnants we have got. You have been at Kennedys Bush for so long. How has it changed? When we came at the end of the 1980s, we were on a bare paddock and the Halswell Quarry was operating as a proper quarry and there weren’t any ponds there. It was grazed and that was it. We got some of the quarry rock to clad our house. We did all the stone work on the outside. It was all very bare around here. So one of the big differences is the bell birds have come back. As we started planting, gradually they came so they are here in the winter. Now we have them all year round and they nest in our forest. What made you stay there? Because we can make the surroundings. I couldn’t bare to live in suburbia with these huge houses and trim little lawns and immaculate gardens. I prefer something wild and lovely. I just couldn’t bare to move, especially with all the investment we have made to make this a lovely place.

species and rejuvenate the city What are your favourite natives to plant? Plants like broadleaf, ngaio, five-finger shrub – things like that. My husband and I have done a lot of work in the Halswell Quarry on a voluntary basis. It is a similar theme; we are interested in the native plants and we want to bring back that theme of planting. We would like to think other people will do it too, so we will have a naturalised waterway from the quarry to where it enters Halswell River. Do you and your husband mainly do the planting by yourself at Halswell Quarry? In the early days we organised working bees and I still have several sites up there I did individually. In the last four or five years, we have got a block of land on Banks Peninsula which we are regenerating. A lot of our spare time goes to helping that bush regenerate and so I don’t spend quite as much time in the quarry. What do you like so much about native plants? They are all evergreen and they are very resistant to fire. That is why those trees should be planted on the Port Hills. It is bad to have so many pine trees there. They just burn so well and

fires get out of control. If you have native evergreen trees that will stop most fires. Will you be involved in the recovery of the Port Hills? I don’t have direct involvement up there but I would certainly like to see more native evergreen plantings on the hill. I think it is the only way to go. But the problem is most of it is private land. I would like to volunteer. But at the moment all our time is spent on our 75ha piece of land between Port Levy Saddle and Little River. That takes up most

of our time but, if I had anymore time, I would like to plant on the Port Hills. Tell me about your rejuvenation project on Banks Peninsula? We don’t actually plant, but we are encouraging the rejuvenation by taking off all stock and getting rid of weeds and pest patrol. It will never be finished in our life-time. And there is quite a bit of grassland on it because it was part of a farm. There is grassland, shrubland and original forest with some big old trees.

There are thousands upon thousands seedlings coming up and they will gradually take over the grasslands. We are not planting it because we could never do it as well as nature does it. We are thinking of the future generations so hopefully they will be able to enjoy it. Hopefully more people will do the same thing so Banks Peninsula can have some more forest. It would be nice if the Port Hills had forest too. Are you still a botanist? I am supposed to be retired. I mainly identify, describe and write about the values of our natural vegetation and remnants. I get short-term contracts with the city council, Department of Conservation or private companies. Companies that are looking to keep their natural remnants. Where did you start your career? I do have a degree from Canterbury University but I started off 40 years ago working in the high country in the tussock grasslands as a botanist. I got most of my knowledge from the hills and mountains in Central Otago and Canterbury. I carried on doing that until 2000 and went out on my own to more local work. I got to know a lot more about Banks Peninsula,

the Canterbury plains vegetation and also around Lake Ellesmere. How do you think the ecology of the city has done postearthquake? It is the thing with all these new subdivisions under way. Sometimes I have to wonder about covering up all this good farmland and low-lying area with houses. I guess it will work out in the end. Some of the subdivisions that are being built in Kennedys Bush shouldn’t be there as they are on land prone to flooding. Did you grow up in the city? I was born in the city but I spent the first 12 years on my life in Karamea on the West Coast. I went to Cashmere High School. A part from travelling overseas I have lived here most my life. What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? I enjoy being on the land here or at Banks Peninsula. I am happiest out in the garden, the bush or out tramping. Nearly all our spare time is spent doing something with native plants. We still go for trips where we go tramping all over the South Island. I enjoy tramping up in the mountains. Last Christmas we went down to Stewart Island.

Is Hornby about to get its day in the sun? Growing up in New Brighton, for me Hornby was just somewhere you drove through when heading south. A main road passing agricultural co-operative Ravensdown, crossing train tracks and a large H sign on the corner marking the mall. Little did I know that Hornby Mall, as it was then, would play such a large part in my future. Only upon moving to Hornby in 2001 did I realise what a strong community it is. Almost like a country town – the Hornby folk did not much care for what happened in the city, did not expect anything in return, but rather got on with whatever job was at hand and remained true and proud of their local history. One major divergence from the country-town analogy is how immediately welcome new people are made to feel. Once you

potentially going to be the most significant city council investment in the area for the foreseeable future. The Hub Hornby will be hosting a display with information on the potential new library and service centre as well as a community pool. The locations and configuration of these facilities are all open for discussion and community input. I think we are very lucky to have such a central resource as Denton and Kyle parks, not to mention the more removed Warren Park. While I know the current sporting users of Denton Park have concerns over potential impacts to their facilities, it is not very often that this community gets to step back and assess its resources to create what could be a model of modern community services. The opportunities for Kyle Park to be upgraded to provide more sporting grounds seems to be well worth exploring given its unsuitability for building on due to being a former landfill site. Whatever the eventual outcome, I would encourage everyone in the community to assess the options and have their say so that Hornby can finally have its day in the sun.

Denton Park Velodrome bears testimony to the ideal siting and much utilised characteristics of Denton Park.Within this context therefore the siting of the south west pool complex would complement this sporting focused venue. In sheer contrast however the siting of the Hornby library and service centre in the same domain lacks integrity and would totally demean the nature of Denton Park. Despite parochial views by those noting separate facilities costing more to build than combining them in a mega centre facilities these views are hypothetical contrived theories as opposed to factual data to support them. The possible loss of one rugby field and loss of cricket fields or reduction in their boundaries would deem the instigation of the entire $34 million mega centre complex at Denton Park a retrograde step. Given the myriad of land opportunities prevalent in south-west a realistically sized plot could surely be obtained to build a purpose built library and service centre to service the needs of Hornby and outlining personnel. Alternatively these could be ideally situated either within or in conjunction to the Hornby Hub, thus attracting a myriad of local national and international visitors utilising a purpose built or leased venue within the business precinct.

Broomfield composer tipped for big stage

By Georgia O’Connor-Harding MANY WOULD not give a second thought to the work that goes into creating an orchestral score for a film. But not for one of the city’s most promising composer’s, Matt Everingham, who will travel to New York city to study the genre of music. The Broomfield resident has been accepted into New York University/ASCAP Film Scoring Summer Workshop to study orchestral music for film. Everingham, 22, has been selected to study with musicians from all around the world and learn from well-known composers, including Mark Snow, next month. At the end of the workshop, musicians on the course will arrange a piece of music to be recorded with the New York University Orchestra. Everingham said while film music is meant to be a background component, it is something he has always focused on. “I have always been interested in how music tells stories. . . how music can narrate story lines and emphasise things you wouldn’t normally think,” he said. Everingham has made a mark

His favourite composer is the late Bernard Herrmann who collaborated with late director Sir Alfred Hitchcock. “He is amazing . . . his themes are really iconic from the golden age era,” Everingham said. And upon his return from New York, Everingham will dive straight into one of his biggest roles yet as the musical director for Showbiz Christchurch’s production of Sister Act. While Everingham has worked in several large productions, it will be his first major show where he will hold the reins as musical director. In between his freelance work, Everingham finished off his Bachelor of Music in composition last year and his Bachelor of Law at Canterbury University. He said he would like to combine a career of music and law ensuring artists are treated fairly. As for performing on the stage himself, Everingham said it is something he has always been scared of. “I am much more comfortable playing the piano or waving a baton instead,” he said.

CBHS look to continue winning run in pre-season By Andrew King CHRISTCHURCH Boys’ High’s first XV will have a pre-season hit-out against Southland Boys’ High School tomorrow as they look towards defending their UC Championship title. The last time the two teams met was when Southland knocked CBHS out of the top eight competition last year, 41-20.

CBHS rugby co-ordinator and assistant coach Rob Smith said it will be “quite nice to play them again.” The team is still in its development stages, with a 30-man squad picked to play Southland and compete in Hamilton on Friday in the St Paul’s Collegiate School rugby festival. After that tournament, the

squad will be narrowed down to 22 for the first XV and another 22 will be picked for the second XV, Smith said. CBHS will open their account against Waimea Combined in the UC Championship on April 29. Chinese cabbage slaw Sift flours with baking powder, baking soda and salt. Whisk egg with buttermilk or water until smooth. Gradually incorporate the dry ingredients and one Tbsp melted butter and

Under the New Zealand Building Code, all buildings, including residential, need to be suitably ventilated, either with opening windows or forced ventilation. For those seeking relief from pain caused by injury, and other physical and mental health issues, Chinese health practitioner Dr Lan Xiao offers a method of treatment that brings fast, and often immediate results. A graduate of Beijing Medical College, Dr Lan established an acupuncture clinic in Christchurch in 1993. As she continued her research and medical practice, she discovered a reflexology network on the human body, an exciting new discovery that became the foundation of her new treatment – acupuncture without needles. With her powerful treatment, results are produced very quickly – even instantly. She likens it to the differences between the power of a car – natural healing, of an aeroplane

– other types of natural healing, and of a rocket – reflexology network. It brings fast results because it is a very precise treatment, Dr Lan says. She uses it to treat people of all ages with many different types of pain in all parts of the body, including arthritic pain, MS, and pain from injury, and there are no side-effects. Depression and anxiety, often the result of ongoing low energy, can also be overcome with Dr Lan’s treatment. For people that have gained weight due to their addiction to sugar, reflexology network treats the cause of the addiction, enabling them to more easily control their weight. Dr Lan has published a book, Dr Lan’s Reflexology Network, which introduces the treatment and explains how it works. Avonside and Shirley

A large Performing Arts Centre, three full-sized Gyms (complete with climbing wall) and four Sportsfields are among the key facilities that will be enjoyed by Avonside Girls’ High School and Shirley Boys’ High School in the future. The two schools are being rebuilt alongside one another and next to the new QEII Sport and Recreation Centre. They will open in time for Term Two of 2019 so students who enrol to study at the schools next year, will only spend just over a year on the schools’ existing sites. The new campus’ design was created by New Zealand’s ASC Architects – part of the ShapED consortium that is building and will also maintain the new schools. Avonside Girls’ Principal Sue Hume says being able to start from scratch has enabled ASC to come up with the ‘ultimate campus’. “We are delighted. The new campus will feature better facilities than either of our schools have ever had in the past.” Shirley Boys’ Headmaster John Laurenson agrees, describing the design as modern and sympathetic to the surrounding area. “The two schools will be set back from Travis Road with numerous trees and landscaped areas. It will be a very green campus,” says John Laurenson. As well as the major facilities, each school will have a long list of specialist learning facilities. Highlights include an Electronics Lab, a 2D and 3D Printing Room, six Science Labs and an Indoor Fitness Centre (complete with exercise equipment including rowing machines, stationery bikes and

treadmills). Sue Hume says the design enables the schools to offer students completely new experiences. “The facilities are just so much better than what we have now. For example, in each school’s Social Sciences and Media there is a large Editing Suite, Presentation Space, two Recording Studios and a Media Studio. It’s a big step up,” says Sue Hume. John Laurenson says the schools will continue to deliver quality single sex education. “Students will spend most of their day in a singlesex environment – that is really important to us. Single sex education benefits both boys and girls. Our students will also benefit, both educationally and socially, from being able to learn alongside and mix with students from the partner school. It is a fantastic opportunity.”

St Thomas of Canterbury College is a year 7 to 13 Catholic integrated boys’ college of 615 students founded on an ethos of social justice and spirituality. Warmer weekends in Canterbury have seen an increase in people enjoying the beach side and to add to the seaside attraction the Pierview is now open Sundays from 10.30am to 2pm for brunch. Offering all the expected scrumptious breakfast/brunch delights, the menu also caters to children. Apart from Sunday Brunch the Pierview is open from 5.30pm Friday to Sunday serving quality, yet very affordable, a la carte dining. The last Sunday of the month has turned into a tradition with the Pierview’s ‘all you can eat’ Buffet.

Priced at just $25 per person, tables fill fast on buffet nights, so bookings are essential. And on all the other Sundays, there’s a choice of the regular dinner menu, blackboard specials, or take advantage of the great value $25 set three course Sunday special.
